Four for the Road

When we introduced the COOLPIX P7000 and billed it as the compact camera pros would want to carry, we knew how we were going to prove that point. It was easy: we asked pros to test its capabilities and explore its potential. Here are excerpts from the field notes of four of our pro shooters.

Jody Dole

“Driving to dinner in Nantucket I spotted this porch, stopped and took a few frames. I shoot RAW and process the files as 16-bit images and get stunning results. My favorite feature: the exposure comp dial right near my thumb. I can dial in half-stops up or down for quick brackets—very cool. Nice design, too. It’s got that substantial, solid Nikon feel. I never go out without that camera.”

Charles Orrico

“A vivid color setting was my default the whole time on St. Thomas to add saturation to combat generally gray days. On this drizzly evening I left the family during dinner to catch this shot of Charlotte Amalie harbor. Check out the detail…and that bright red light on the mast of the middle sailboat. One smart, sharp camera.”

Bob Krist

“I took this on location in Arizona while shooting end-result images for the P7000, but this wasn’t a planned picture. I was waiting for the light to change to get outdoor portraits of the cowboys we were working with when I caught a glint of sun off the spur. I just swung the camera around, zoomed it out and took a quick shot. This camera is amazingly quick and responsive.”

Tom Bol

“Red Rock Crossing in Sedona, Arizona, is a magnificent place to photograph. Get there at sunset on a clear evening after a rain or when Oak Creek’s running high and the reflections are incredible. The P7000 was totally capable of picking up the subtle colors and the reflection’s glow. The first compact I’ve seen at a pro level…fantastic file quality.”
